Some people are unable to wear contacts and must wear their prescription glasses while working. These alone are not designed to offer protection from flying particles, but putting safety glasses over them is recommended to help keep the eyes safe.
There are certain occupations that are susceptible to eye injuries. High risk jobs include construction, mining, carpentry, automotive repair, maintenance, welding, electrical, and manufacturing. People who wear prescription eyewear, and work in areas that have small particles or flying objects of any kind, need to wear over the glass safety glasses. These should have side shields attached to them for optimal protection. Wearing protective eye wear keeps chemicals or contaminated droplets from entering the eye and causing infections.
