ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2015 STANDARDS
New ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2015 Standards
Several key changes have been made to the previous 2010 standard that reinforces the importance of selecting safety glasses based on specific hazards. The 2010 ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 revision was a dramatic shift away from product configuration requirements toward to hazard-based structure. The 2015 revision continues to focus on product performance and harmonizes with global standards; additionally, the standard fine-tunes the 2010 hazard-based product performance organization. The 2015 standard includes information to assist safety professionals and employees in making informed decisions in determining and selecting appropriate eye and face protection. Information given includes the SELECTION GUIDE and PROTECTOR MARKINGS tools. These tools will enable the readers to become familiar with the protector markings and the corresponding performance requirements given in the standard which will help evaluate the capabilities and limitations of particular equipment based on the manufacturer's claims.
The update in the revision reflects the need to streamline test methods in to coincide with similar global standards such as those for impact testing and luminous transmittance for welding protectors. Additionally, the new revision recognizes new innovations in protector design that had not been previously addressed and which can provide appropriate protection for workplace eye and face hazards.
The ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2015 Standard prescribes the design, performance specifications and marking of eye and face protection products including the many types of spectacles, goggles, faceshields, and welding helmets worn by employees in manufacturing and processing plants, university and research laboratories, and other occupational environments.
Standards are evaluated and revised periodically by the Z87 Committee on Safety Eye and Face Protection, administered by the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) and approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Safety eye wear must conform to the most recent standards and the standard is incorporated in OSHA regulations for personal protective equipment. Thus, for safety reasons as well as protection for the companies, knowledge and conformation to the new standard is critical.
